The design of the plague doctor mask was intended to protect the wearer from coming into direct contact with infectious materials and bad odors, which were believed to be the causes of disease transmission at the time. The masks typically featured a beak-like structure that extended several inches in front of the face, often filled with aromatic substances like herbs, spices, or flowers. This was done in an attempt to mitigate the miasma theory of disease transmission, which suggested that illnesses spread through “bad air.” The scented materials inside the beak were thought to counteract these noxious fumes.

The rest of the mask covered the entire face and had glass openings for the eyes, providing some protection for the physician while still allowing them to see. The mask was also equipped with a wide-brimmed hat and a full-length black robe, which was worn as a protective suit to minimize skin exposure.

It’s important to note that while the plague doctor attire was intended to offer some form of protection, it was based on limited medical understanding of disease transmission at the time. The bubonic plague is caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, which is primarily spread through flea bites and contact with infected rodents. The beak-like design and scented substances wouldn’t have provided significant protection against fleas or direct contact with infected animals.

The leather mask is mostly riveted together with some hand-stitching and some metal leather staples. The eyepieces are sewn in with waxed thread. The mask comes white with red lenses.

It is made of medium weight veg tanned leather and has an adjustable strap. It comes with two series of ventilation holes on the top and bottom of the beak for ease of breathing. Paint is designed to wear off of rivets for that aged look.

This is not merchandising or fanart, these are the original masks ordered by the Swedish rock band Ghost for their 2018-2019 “A Pale Tour Named Death” and promotional video. They are not identical due to the fact that we customized the Ghost’s masks for the stage.

The plague doctor masks are made of rumpled leather, each one is made from vegetable tanned cowhide and has inset gray acrylic lenses (like wearing dark glasses). It comes with an adjustable leather strap with buckle and should accommodate any sized head. If your head is larger than 24 inch (61cm) circumference we can make the strap extra long, please add a note to your order stating that you need a extra long strap.

Each one is individually shaped by hand, and as the folds are different each mask is unique. They are quite lightweight, weighing no more than four ounces (105 gm) each, making them comfortable to wear for hours at a time. There is a series of ventilation holes on the bottom of the beak for easy breathing.

During the Black Plague, it was thought that bad smells were the cause of the plague. Plague Doctors therefore wore masks with long beak-like noses stuffed with flowers or smoke to hide the smells.
