Plague doctor hat made from full grain vegetable tanned cowhide. There is a spring steel wire sewn into the edge of the brim to help hold its shape. The crown has been wet-formed over a custom built hat block, and flares out at the top. It has been coated with a stiffener to keep its shape, however it should not be worn in the rain as it can lose its shape if it gets wet. The hat comes with a soft leather sweatband and on the inside top is a portrayal of the Fürst engraving. It is painted black with flexible acrylic latex paint. The hat comes with a removable, adjustable chin strap. This hat is identical to the ones worn by the Swedish band Ghost.

The Medium/Large size should fit most adults. We’ve made it rather large as it is to be worn over a mask, a balaclava or hood, and perhaps a cowl. Inside circumference of crown measures 24″. If your head circumference is larger than about 23 ½” we offer the hat in XL size, where the circumference of crown measures 25½”.

Tempus Fugit / Winged Hourglass Staff: The topper is an original sculpt cast in resin and available in gold color. The hardwood 24″ / 61cm staff is stained black and comes in two parts which must be twisted together and measures around 25″ / 63.5cm long once assembled.

The wooden canes were used to prevent physical contact with patients of the Black Death. Thanks to the cane they could examine the patients without touching them, turning them over, pointing out the affected areas, helping them to undress if necessary, or even using them to check their pulse. The canes were also used to keep people away or prevent closeness to the doctor. Sometimes the sick people rushed to the Plague Doctor to ask for help, so it was necessary to have a good wooden cane to prevent them from touching the doctor. Depending on the country, doctors used smaller or longer canes, but usually always made of wood.

It is known that, unfortunately, in some more religious regions doctors used the cane also to beat patients and that they repented of their sins; Many people of this century believed that the Black Death was a punishment from God and the sick themselves asked to be beaten as part of their repentance.

The canes were adorned at one end with a winged hourglass, which refers to the swift passage of time: Tempus Fugit.

The plague doctor masks are made of rumpled leather, each one is made from vegetable tanned cowhide and has inset gray acrylic lenses (like wearing dark glasses). It comes with an adjustable leather strap with buckle and should accommodate any sized head. If your head is larger than 24 inch (61cm) circumference we can make the strap extra long, please add a note to your order stating that you need a extra long strap.

Each one is individually shaped by hand, and as the folds are different each mask is unique. They are quite lightweight, weighing no more than four ounces (105 gm) each, making them comfortable to wear for hours at a time. There is a series of ventilation holes on the bottom of the beak for easy breathing.

During the Black Plague, it was thought that bad smells were the cause of the plague. Plague Doctors therefore wore masks with long beak-like noses stuffed with flowers or smoke to hide the smells. If you want to enjoy a more realistic and fun experience, we recommend to introduce some kind of aromatic herb at the beak of the mask when you use it!! This Halloween pays tribute to the 50 million people who died because of the ‎Black Death‬. Dress up as a plague doctor!
